Around 1875, American songwriter Henry Work stayed at the George Hotel while traveling to England. He was told the unique story of his old clock and his previous owner, and after seeing the clock for himself, he decided to write a song about the amazing coincidence that the clock stopped forever when the owner died. Mr. Work returned to America and published a song that sold over a million copies of music sheet about a grandfather clock called "My Grandfather's Hour". Until then, clocks like those at the old George Hotel were given various names, but only because Henry Work's song had a huge upright clock called 'Grandfather Hour'.
Grandfather clocks, also sometimes known as 'Coffin Clocks', come in various sizes and designs, ranging from antiques built by famous watchmakers centuries ago, to those made today.
Grandfather clocks were developed by watchmakers in the mid-1600s in an effort to gain a higher level of care accuracy. By giving them a pendulum again, the clock makes time stay better. This long pendulum clock is placed on a high wooden crate so that it can stand upright on the floor.
From then on, the Grandfather clock has become a very popular household item, and has emerged in a variety of cases - many styles have become fashionable, and then are disliked as fashion sense changes.
