The story of the line began in 1730 with the birth of Josiah Wedgwood to a family that produces pottery. At the age of six, Josiah was an apprentice and at the age of 14, he had chicken pox that weakened his right knee. In 1760, Josiah owns its own factory and has experimented with various porcelain formulas, clays and glazes and technological advances in the art to transfer the design to the finished product. In 1765 he made a complete set for Queen Charlotte, advertising himself as "the potter for the Queen" and his effort took off.
Josiah's peak performance is the creation of his Jasperware. Jasper is a translucent clay that marries basalt and the original formula of Josiah to produce a homogeneous and solid colored pot. After more than 10,000 failed experiments with various clays and glazes, Jasperware launched in 1775 to great success, especially to its customers in the new democracy in the United States. Josiah states shortly thereafter, "no goods are too rich or too expensive for Americans."
Wedgwood died in 1795 and the business was handed over to his children, who had been raised with wealth, not at all interested in running it. The job fell to his nephew, Tom Byerly struggling with the burden of running a business he did not like. The next 25 years proved difficult for the company and Josiah II took over to turn things around by restoring the formula and business standards set by his father. Needless to say, the constant economic turmoil, warfare and emerging competition made the 1800s extremely difficult and new in the 20th century, under the leadership of Josiah V, things began to improve.
With new and efficient production facilities, aggressive worldwide marketing especially in America, and exclusive designs, Wedgwood China's products start to gain excellence in the industry. In 1966, Wedgwood shares were introduced to the London Stock Exchange and since then, the company has been involved in the aggressive expansion. Assets of Susie Cooper, Royal Tuscan, William Adams, Franciscans, Coal Mason, Waterford, and Rosenthal have been combined with Wedgwood to form the Wedgwood group. Josiah Wedgwood, I'll be proud.
